Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin
Did not finish book. Stopped at 29%.
Last week, determined to finish 2022's most popular book by the end of the year, I pulled T3 back off my shelf. After an hour or so, I turned the page and saw "2", as in Chapter 2. I promptly put the book back in place on the shelf. I made a haul at the discount bookshop and felt distinctly that I can't start anything else until I finish this. So I made it almost through the first part and disliked it immensely the entire time. The characters are unlikeable, self-centered, and aside from narrative about their histories, they are one-dimensional. We get no insight into this supposed grand love story aside from them telling each other they love each other. Sometimes the author interjects with narration instead of letting the characters tell the story. This style is disjointed and jarring. I am definitely okay with putting this book down and leaving these characters be where they are.
Graphic: Suicide
Moderate: Chronic illness
Minor: Car accident
I have seen some posts on social media regarding this author's Zionism. I am coming from the perspective that being pro-Palestinians is not antisemitic and if I have missed something I want to add the disclaimer that I am not defending the author but being fair. There is mention of Israel because that is where one character is from, and another character reads a book about "the founding of Israel". This did not come across to me as the author supporting Israel but the character losing themselves in a relationship. The way it is worded is definitely problematic. The character himself is off-putting and unlikeable and there does not seem to be any glorification of Israel as a government or state that I came across. There are Jewish characters in this book who are not religious and I definitely do not see a problem with that; it was one thing I liked about them.
