Jorge left me feeling nothing but awe by the end of the novel. Even though he doesn't shy away from the brutality and the immorality of the life of being a member of the Captain of the Sands, there was just this sense of fantasy and magic that just followed the characters throughout the story; there was a point where one of the characters escaped from the prison and I saw myself cheering in the tube as if he was some misjudged hero. I think there's something so beautiful about bringing magic into such grim situations.

I highly recommend the book. It's very reminiscent of City of God(film).
