Citizen: An American Lyric by Claudia Rankine
challenging
emotional
reflective
4.5
To POC readers: try and read this on a good mental health day, because it can be heavy.
Definitely an incredible work. The first couple pages are a bit weak, but the remainder of the book is wonderfully written. The author writes about a lot of micro-aggressions and daily adversities which are common to the lives of so many people of color. It definitely prompted quite a bit of reflecting on painful experiences on my part.
A challenging read for sure. Really enjoyed the writing of the 'scripts' in the latter sections of the book. Extremely unique yet powerful. This work is the embodiment of sincerity.
Feel like this is objectively a 5, but I'm rating it 4.5 for now as I had a bit of difficulty understanding portions. I'd love to return to this book and reread it when I'm older and hopefully more intelligent.
