Fruits Basket, Vol. 23 by Natsuki Takaya

5.0

Takaya said that she started the covers with Tohru and ended with Kyoko - and her mom is so much at the heart of all Tohru does and how she chooses to go forward with her life, both when the series starts and now, at the end. I reread this series every year, and every year I find something new to love - and a lot more to cry over. when Hiro tells Kisa to cry as much as she wants, I always take it personally, like I haven't been crying my eyes out during the past several volumes.

this last one, though, where Kyoko hits my greatest fear on the nail - along with my most fervent wish - is so hard to get through. Takaya has such insight to create Kyoko so believably, both as a woman and a mother, and the artistic depiction of Kyoko . . . it's heartbreaking.

I'll return next year and the next, because I can't NOT.
