The Diary of a Young Girl: The Definitive Edition by Anne Frank

challenging emotional funny hopeful informative inspiring reflective slow-paced

I always tell people if you only ever read one book, that it should be this one. Anne looks at the world with joy, hope, empathy and kindness. She is also a teen trying to understand the world while in hiding, during one of the darkest chapters in our world’s history, all the while her people are being killed because of there religion. The way she looks at the world is beautiful and hopeful. Within the context of history, we can see through Anne’s lens and understand the importance of empathy and compassion for other human beings. We can also see what propaganda can do and how to question our leaders, and to seek justice for marginalized communities and for people who may be different from us. Whether that be by race/religion/sexuality/etc. We can learn from each other, laugh with each other and love each other, if only we yearn for what brings us together, not by what makes us different. Though we know how unfortunate and tragic the end of this story is, throughout it we see hope, joy and the dreams of a teenage girl. She brings light to the dark and those are traits I strive to have.
