TJR takes the reader through the gruesome complexities of grieving and the doubt that comes along with it. She defines what constitutes “real” love and if there is a way to measure it. The book navigates all stages of grief and shows no loss looks or feels the same. The martyrdom of someone who has passed can make moving through life after them as difficult as taking off the rose-colored glasses.

I would have loved more examination of Ben’s flaws but I do think Elsie learns to stop being defined by the most “interesting” thing about her, having a dead husband. I loved her evolving relationship with Susannah and watching them navigate loss together. Over all, a good read as to be expected from TJR.
