A book that depicts the complexity of the intersection between love, lust and idealization. The main character’s self worth is deeply connected to Piki’s mood and affection. She is desperate to be let in and to be a given part of Piki’s life. When she is kept on a safe distance she becomes more and more desperate.

Oksanen has really managed to convey how deeply devastating and at the same time life affirming love can be. Even though the novel was a a bit too tragic at times, Oksanen’s skillful writing never made me want to put it away. I followed their journey from the first, to the last word.
