The Shadow of What Was Lost by James Islington

5.0

Very good start to an amazing series.
I wasn't utterly stunned after reading this book, and I was occasionally annoyed at how many unknowns and secrets there were. I enjoyed it enough to get the next book, and I'm glad that I did. I initially gave this book 4/5, but after understanding the context and how well this set up the rest of the series, I had to give it 5/5.
This book really is unique, despite maybe some occasional fantasy tropes (which didn't actually bother me). You can tell the author is incredibly thoughtful with character interactions, plot, and even world philosophy. But I don't want to give the wrong, impression - the book was exciting, and only got more so in the following books.
