Dark Heir by C.S. Pacat

5.0

When I first started Dark Heir, I was in a reading slump and didn't make it past the first 150 pages.
A few months later, I finally started it all over again, listening to the audiobook for the sixteen chapters I had already read —Because I can't for the life of me re-read something all alone— and then taking back the story where I had stopped.

I have to admit that, at first, I was afraid I wouldn't enjoy it because I had made a few attempts to start it all over again and failed miserably. I couldn't concentrate and only had in mind the fact that I had so many pages to re-read, that I remembered enough to not be surprised by anything but not sufficiently to just start where I stopped the first time. Having been able to listen to the audiobook truly helped me and I'm glad this mean exist for those like me who sometimes have a hard time concentrating and find it easier with someone narrating the story in their ears.

And what a nice surprise this book was! I couldn't stop myself from reading it and I think I enjoyed it way more than the first volume.
The writing is beautiful as always and easily pulls you in the story in a way that makes you want to keep reading it and never stop.
I was overjoyed to meet again the previous characters and meet new ones through new point of views I never believed I would experience in this book. Seeing the old world and Anharion through Sarcean eyes was a treat I didn't know I needed but which brought so much to the story.

However, having so many POVs was a kind of torture of its own and It definitely felt like a test of my patience throughout the whole book ahah. I couldn't wait to know what would happen to X character but kept being brought back to another at crucial moments!
Also, knowing the truth about Will, I was always looking forward to the grand reveal. It felt exhilarating to witness how the story would unfold, learning things about the past, the connections between Visander, the lady, Anharion and Sarcean.

And this ending! I had already read the last lines before reaching the end but I never expected them to be told in this context. I felt heartbroken, confused and so curious at the same time, and I can't wait to see where Pacat is going to take us next!
