Her Shadowed Wolves by Helen Scott

3.0

This is book three of the House of Wolves and Magic series and sees Nina and her three mates having to tackle a mountain, in search for the oracle, who can hopefully give them the answers to what they need to do next. They’ve had to wait until Nina was fit enough to travel rough, as they take their backpacks and a tent with them. They have to avoid Jax and his men, who are still on the hunt for Nina, whom Jax has fixated on and wants to force a mate bond with. They have to decide to either follow the road up most of the mountain, which will probably be watched by Jax’s men, or have to travel through the Shadow Forest, home to a reclusive group of wolf shifters, who are hostile to outsiders, especially those who spend the majority of their time as humans and will attack anyone who enters their territory. The bonds with her three mates Micah, Blake and Roman, are growing stronger, basically because she is having sex with one or more, at every opportunity!

They decide to skirt the forest, to avoid the road itself, but still come under attack and have to run into the forbidden forest to escape. Nina knows a little secret she hasn’t told her mates, the fact that she is expecting to meet two more mates! She also has some strange dreams telling her to hurry and that she needs to get to where she is going faster, or her and her mates will be in danger. Jax seems to believe he has a divine right to Nina for himself and he rules the rest of his pack by fear. He has known Nina since she was a child and knows what happened to both her parents when they voiced concern about the then alpha forcing a mating bond with a very young female, and how she also lost her brother when he tried to get her away from the pack. He is far worse than that alpha and seems to only want the power and control over others and will use evil methods to get what he wants.

Nina manages to meet her fourth mate, Tate, who was a newish member to Jax’s pack, but not one of the fanatical followers of Jax thankfully. Even knowing that Nina has fated mates of her own is of no importance to Jax, he considers them all to be insignificant in comparison to his rights to Nina! The group get forced further into the forest and come under attack by the wolf pack of the forest, seeing something they have never seen before and being totally overwhelmed. Blake has been badly injured, with an infection taking hold and they need to run away and hope to get to a hospital in time. Events occur at the hospital that make matters much worse for Nina and her mates and hard choices need to be made. She is running out of time and they haven’t even gotten anywhere, over days of trekking about the mountain. They are straight back to square one and the storyline hasn’t really progressed any further from the beginning of the book, apart from lots of hot sex and fighting with other wolves. I would have loved more of a progression with the story, yes she has met one more mate and has kept it secret that there is one more to come, obviously in the next book, but the story goes backward in their search for the oracle on the mountain. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
