“You and I keep looking for light in the darkness, expecting it to appear. But it already has.” I touch his shoulder. "We’re it, boyo. Broken and cracked and stupid as we are, we’re the light, and we’re spreading.”

MY HEART.

It's only January, but it's very possible that Red Rising will go down as my favorite series of 2023. The pacing, the plot twists, the character development, and the heart attacks (both mine as a reader and on-page) are all perfectly balanced and so deftly, masterfully handled. Brown has a way with prose that kept me on a knife's edge for the 18.5 hours I spent listening to this. Did I basically ignore my fiance for two days so I could keep listening? Maybe. It's fine, he still loves me.

The character development in this is complicated and nuanced and jaggedly sharp, and I love these people, flaws and pitfalls and all. Sevro, my baby, you hatchet-faced goblin weirdo, I love you so much.

I don't have the emotional fortitude right now to dive into the next books in the series, so I'll come back to them when I'm ready, but I can't wait to rejoin Darrow when I am.
