Redemption in Indigo by Karen Lord

4.0

Overall, this had a fantastic concept, nicely unusual plot, and an enjoyably cozy style of storytelling. However, perhaps as a side effect of composing this like an oral tale, it felt a little too choppy and brief. The beginning and the end were solid, but the middle, with all the magic, felt a little too vague. The character-work was a little too simplistic to really get engaged in Paama's life or see why her travels with the djombi affected her so much. Ultimately, I feel like just five more chapters or so of writing, with some complex exploration of Paama's inner thoughts, would've turned this from a decent book into a great one.
