Here for It by R. Eric Thomas is a wonderful collection of essays. I haven’t read any of his articles or columns and I didn’t know what to expect, and this book is a delight. It is filled with laugh-out-loud humor, grief, loneliness, love, belonging, and self-acceptance. Thomas balances the sharp with the sadness; he will make you laugh and cry.
Thomas is a gay, Black man navigating his own identity in relationship to his Christianity and Baptist upbringing. Where does he belong? Can his being gay coexist with his faith? His is a journey of self-acceptance and self-love, of having the courage to turn the page of his life each day and keep living and facing those fears and struggles, and it is an ongoing journey, and I found that to be particularly powerful
