Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire by J.K. Rowling

5.0

"We soon must all make a choice between what is right and what is easy."

This is the transitional book. With the impressive villain Barty Crouch Jr, Cedric's murder, and Voldemort's restoration, Our magical, fun, but creepy world in the first book is gone, and the YA darkness starts here. However, this book doesn't lack lighthearted aspects, including Harry's feud with Ron, Dobby's reintroduction, and the satirization of Saviour complexes through Hermione.
To defend that last point, the spew subplot is more nuanced than people think. Hermoine has good intentions, but her lack of communication with the elves she's supposedly helping or the reasonable Dumbledore renders her cause ineffectual at best.
While I have some problems with repeated information in the Dénouement, this is one of the best books in the series.
