Aurora Sky by Nikki Jefford

I liked the concept for this book when I first heard about it. A girl is in a fatal car crash and wakes up with little sign of injury, new organs and a government job that she doesn't want. Aurora has a rare blood type that when mixed with a certain chemical cocktail injected into her, leaves her blood tainted and can paralyse a vampire long enough to kill it. Now the government tell her that she is a vampire hunter who must use her new gift to kill the bad vampires. Except Aurora is in high school and doesn't want to do it. I liked the idea of the blood paralysis and the vampire hunting and I soooo wanted to love this series.
Lets start with the good. There were fresh ideas in the plot, the setting was Alaska which made a really great change, the action scenes were well written, the story flows nicely and the author does put together a pretty good story. The last section where we finally have prolonged contact with the vampires and Noel features more in it, is actually really good and I liked that part of the book a lot. It just took too long to get to the main point of the story for me and I found it pretty slow.
Character wise, Aurora is not my favourite MC. I get that she has issues with what has happened to her, but at times she annoyed me. I didn't like the way she looked down on Noel and her friends, the only people who seem to like her. Noel, without doubt, was the most interesting character and I'd have liked to see more of her. Valerie I can't stand the sight of and have little interest in seeing more of her. I hated the agents as well and found Dante quite irritating. I did quite like Fane but for me, Noel and Marcus were the most interesting.
So why just 3 stars? My biggest issue was that I had no idea from the blurb that the book was going to be pretty much set in her high school. The last thing I was looking for was another YA high school book full of teen angst, where almost every scene is Aurora at school or skipping school, going home from school, being with Fane. To be honest, had I known about this, I wouldn't actually have read it. We get a lot about Aurora's snotty so called best friend, the predictable fights with the beautiful school bitch Valerie over the hot mysterious boy Fane, classes and lunchtime meetings, skipping school to be with Fane, kissing Fane, obsessing about Fane, drinking and sex...Like I said I was expecting a kickass vampire hunter with training and missions and stuff instead of being back in the usual YA plots with vampires that I've seen too often already.
I was expecting it to be about her being sent out on countless missions to kill the vampires but other than her initiation, we don't have her in contact with a bad vampire for about 125 pages, and there was no training for the job or anything much to do with her job, except Aurora complaining about not wanting to do it. Those pages are filled with the love angst between Aurora, Fane and Valerie, which didn't greatly excite me. I felt as if we were just hanging around school waiting for the latest love drama or Aurora to do something bad. I found that pretty disappointing. I expected a lot more vampire hunting.
If the whole book had been like the last section where everything kicks off, I would have loved this book. I did find it well written and there is no doubting that this is a good author who knows how to write a plot. If you like high school paranormal books you will probably enjoy this book and I do recommend it to other readers. For me, it just wasn't what I was expecting and I can't see myself continuing with the series.
