Dreamhunter by Elizabeth Knox
4.0
"Dreamhunter" by Elizabeth Knox starts off a bit slowly, but by the end I was really hooked. Knox has created quite a world in Dreamhunter. Dreamhunters are the celebrities of society -- people with a special gift who are able to enter a mysterious land called simply the Place, "catch" dreams while sleeping there, and then bring them back to share with others. Dreams are performed in special opera houses, where the dreamcatcher sleeps upon a central bed while the patrons sleep in chambers lining the balconies, viewing the dreamcatcher's dreams. Cousins Laura and Rose are the daughters of the two biggest dreamcatcher stars, and at age fifteen are old enough to Try to enter the Place. When Laura's father disappears, Laura begins to discover a sinister underbelly in the world of dreamcatchers, and sets off on her own quest to both find her father and expose the hidden secrets. Dreamhunter is a coming of age story mixed with a compelling fantasy tale, with more than a few strands of the Golem story mixed in as well. I'm already reading the sequel, so I would rate this book overall as a success.
