If you asked 13/14 year old me what my initial thoughts about this book were - I would say scandal / something my mother would never have let me read if she ever saw it in my backpack. Thankfully/ surprisingly? My middle school and high school had this series in their collection so I was able to check the books out without anyone being none the wiser at my house lol.
A part of me knows I was intrigued by the idea of reading about teenagers doing things my friends and I didn’t - drinking, smoking, being on their own essentially with minimal parent involvement, sex…
Now in my early 30’s - re-reading this makes me wonder if there ever is a grain of truth to these fictional stories about rich kids. The writing itself isn’t the best and sometimes the dialogue is cringey. But each character has their own persona embedded into this book.
Blair is second rate, always passed over. Serena is the golden girl, literally & figuratively. Nate is in love with Serena but doesn’t know if he wants to follow in his dad’s footsteps. Dan is dramatic poet emo kid personified. Vanessa is a try hard lol. Jenny is painfully naive. Chuck is scum
