Inspector Thomas Lynley of Scotland Yard is assigned to a case in Keldale where a man has been decapitated and his daughter has confessed to the murder.  He will be working the case with Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers who has worked as a detective before but could not get along with anyone so she was demoted.  Lynley is an interesting character in that he is Lord Thomas Lynley but he chooses to work as a public servant.  Barbara doesn't like him because he she sees him as an entitled womanizer.  Much of the storyline allows us to get to know Lynley and Havers.  The case is very interesting as are the people who inhabit Keldale.  We see the toll that it takes on the investigators.  The conclusion of the case is very emotional and well handled by the author.
