Salt Magic by Hope Larson, Rebecca Mock

I loved everything about this book from the character designs to the magical alternate history setting. Vonceil is a great protagonist for this coming of age story. She wants adventure, she wants the glamor of the wider world, and she can't comprehend just how much war can change a person when her brother comes home a more serious person than the one who left. There's an old eccentric Uncle to help her as she starts her quest, but who also needs her help. Neither of the witches she meet are quite what Vonceil first thinks when she meets them. There's a big party attended by well-dressed animals. Through all the twists and turns of her quest, Vonceil is learning what it means to make sacrifices and figuring out how the bonds of love and family influence your choices in life. She confronts death and comes away a little bit closer to understanding the responsibility that her brother has found in life but also embracing the joy of being alive with the opportunity for new experiences, which sets her course in life somewhat different from her brother's. The ending of this book nearly made me cry.
