They're Strictly Friends by Chloe Liese

1.0

this so poorly written. I’m sorry i don’t know how else to put it. ( in short: just go read the brown sisters trilogy by t. hilbert — well written, romantic and steamy)
it’s incredibly tacky, 10x more so than the title.
the progression and pacing are disorienting and make it hard to look past, even for a light, generic read.
the placement of certain conversations given what the characters are doing is just ?!?? (the best i can give without spoilers)
how the author defines their relationship is constantly contradicted every chapter. they will do or say things that simply do not make sense given what the reader learned a few pages prior.
i love a good “unrealistic” romance and somehow this books still was terrible. in all honesty i didn’t get halfway through despite trying to leave and comeback to it several times.

The only reason I give it 2 stars rather than one is because the characters have realistic issues to grapple with, health wise. although given that the main character is passionate about diversity&inclusion (it is her area of study and dream profession) — it’s odd that the entire main character line is variants of white, all upper class. as in the author, exhaustively, talks about ~how~ irish, italian, french etc the characters are — but in a way that almost seems cheap?
elodie for example, is french, and as someone who is as well, it was nice to see. but then the author overplays her french attributes and interjects them at the expense of the story. it is just was not well done for me.
