The Jasad Heir by Sara Hashem

Do you know the feeling you sometimes get when you get a few chapters into a new book? The feeling you get that this book is going to be a good one? It’s exactly how I felt with this one! I did buddy-read this with Julie.

I loved Sylvia from the moment I met her. I knew that she had a tough past and once you learn what she’s really been through, it’s hard not to root for her. There are many times throughout this book that she has her mind set on just trying to survive. She constantly tells herself that she doesn’t care about anyone else but her actions tend to show the opposite. Not only is she really strong-willed, she is funny and very caring. In fact, I loved so many of the supporting characters in this book and she helped them shine.

With Arin, we are getting a whole different personality and you have no idea what you’re going to get. I actually really enjoyed that we had a harder time reading him. It made it all the more enjoyable learning about him and seeing his relationships with several of the characters. He puts on a pretty great front but there is a lot more under the surface. The cat-and-mouse game that he and Sylvia have going on throughout this book is so much fun!

In the beginning, it was a little harder to grasp the world and all the magic that came with it. Eventually, it all started to click. I will say, it’s very unique and I think she did such a great job with the world-building throughout the rest of the book. I loved the writing style so much. I was shocked to realize that this is a debut author!! It does not read that way at all and I cannot wait to see where she goes from here! There are so many quotable moments and this is one that I really loved…

“One day, I would stand trial before the spirits of my dead. One day, the bodies I never buried would call upon me to answer for my sins. One day, but not today.”

I really wish I would have tabbed this book! I might have to do a re-read at some point and do that.

There are times in this book that you will shake your head and think, wow, how are they so blind?! People are always trying to overpower someone or a group of people but then do the SAME thing! It’s so relevant to real life right now that it’s scary.

Overall, this was such an excellent read! I had a hard time putting it down and loved the world so much. The characters have such amazing arcs that it’s so hard not to fall in love with them. There’s a slow-burn romance too but I loved that it was not the focus. There’s a lot of fantasy out there but this is one that I highly recommend!

Many thanks to Orbit Books for an ARC. All thoughts and opinions are my own!
