1984 by George Orwell

I read this after reading Brave New World, and I like how both books say "this is the only way it could have gone". In fact, they overlap in certain parts, if you assume that the proletariat in 1984 is "all non-alpha people" in BNW... and the thinkers (inner party / alphas) are the ones that have to keep up the facade that all is well, until they can't anymore and they get reeducated / shipped to an island.
The only real difference is that there are more happy drugs in BNW, and people are not really rationed, but even the proletariat was relatively happy in 1984, with the songs & whatever drivel they are given..
I have no idea what direction we will be going into, but it's scary and exciting.
