Tess of the D'Urbervilles by Thomas Hardy, Tim Dolin

5.0

My "centuries old read" for the year. I never expected to like it, but I loved the tragedy of it. 2017 me feels so bad for 1800's Tess that I wanted to be her friend that would advise her to leave the criminal and the idiot and just go on with her life far far away. It is so sad that centuries ago raped women are reduced to shame when in fact they are the ones who were wronged. Rape must have been rampant during their time. I shudder at the thought, and I am glad to live in the present. This book was beautifully written and so emotional. I think this is also required reading for other schools. Look at that, I hit two birds with one stone :-)
