I liked this better than the first one, I think. Except that about seven-eighths of the way through the book there was a short time when I felt that I was just waiting for it to end. But the end itself was satisfying even though I'd been predicting it for a while. This takes place in Paris and there's a lot of crazy supernatural stuff going on involving not just creatures but the fabric of time. I especially liked the well creatures and the long-haired furry ones; it was fun to see pet-like creatures in this world. I had an easier time telling Ruthven apart from Varney this time although the two ghost-chasers were pretty indistinguishable. But that was okay; it didn't really seem to matter since they did everything together anyway. I will never enjoy vampire details and they seem to be unavoidable in these stories but that says more about me. There are things I like about this series. And I seem to be rather equivocal in my liking. They are fun books.
