Re-reading this for the nth time because I'm finally seeing the painting in person soon.

This seems to be a controversial book, but I never realised this when I first read it. I don’t know, maybe people were expecting something similar to The Secret History (but why would she write the same thing again?). I’ve been told that people disliked the the Vegas part, but that's my favourite bit. Theo’s loss and desolation, paired with the hellish sprawl of the suburban desert…her writing is so beautiful to me.

The detail and characterisation are incredible. Everyone seems so alive. Theo’s emotions are devastating. Audrey isn’t even a real person, but I miss her too.

I pick up on this more when re-reading, but the first part is hard to read because you want to change the course of the characters so badly. So many times things could have ended up differently! It’s deliciously catastrophic. This is another thing me and Tartt have in common - we love a good sense of impending doom.

Not much else to say about one of my favourite books that I’ve already read a bunch of times. I’m still avidly awaiting her next book, if there will be one!
