The Lost and the Chosen by Ivy Asher

4.0

This one is definitely an RH novel not to be missed. I'll be honest I almost didn't start it because the blurb really didn't get my attention, and opening up to an under the table fight in the sample I wasn't sure at all, but once the initial planned fight was over, the story takes off and it's so much better than the blurb makes it sound.

The world Asher has built here of Casters, Shifter and Lamia and who knows what else is extremely interesting and I can't wait to see that world grow and develop more. Asher shines in both world building and a fast paced plot. Vinnia is the sort of strong character that you both root for and whose emotional damages gets under your skin. Its impossible not to feel for this strong, broken girl who is so alone in the world.

That said the story isn't without its fault. The Lost and The Chosen introduces and immense cast of characters to the point that very few outside of Vinnia are distinctive. Of her Chosen Sabin is the only one who doesn't blur together with the rest. Ryker has some distinctive features but the twins and Knox could almost all be the same character. The sisters at the house basically come across as the same person with three different names. Lachlan and Aylen are the only ones that stand out in the palladins. I could keep going but its feels a bit like being the new kid in a small school where everyone gives you their name the first day and you remember like 3 of them while the rest are a blur. Honestly there are enough characters here that it practically is the population of a small school and because of that character development outside of Vinnia definitely falters. I would love to see more of what came before as in the relationship between Talon and Vinnia. I'm strongly hoping all the characters begin to become distinctive as the series continues because there's so much potential in the world Asher has created here.

My only other complaint is the relationship/s with the Chosen. I'll buy that the magic picked them and I appreciate that Asher doesn't claim endless love because of that but more attraction. This is definitely believable and I appreciate the slower pacing despite throwing in the idea of fate. What is throwing me off is the awkward way they keep having discussions about it. They're cringeworthy in that way the sex talk with your parents when you were a kid was cringeworthy. No one really wants to hear their father talking to them about urges they may experience and the spell out our relationship discussions have that same feel to them. If she stopped taking the time to spell out the relationship through awkward talks the story would be so much smoother because Asher does a wonderful job of capturing Vinnia's attraction, confusion, hesitation and desire. The feelings are there plan as day, the discussions severely detract from that though.

Overall The Lost and The Chosen was a page turner and I'm definitely hooked on this series. I can't wait to read more.
