I remember the day I read the first page - I fell in love IMMEDIATELY. There was so much going on in that first page, all of it soo familiar to me. The call of the adhan at the masjid for prayers, a girl wearing an abaya, names that are like mine - in another language & very real.
It felt like a warm hug from a long lost friend 🥹❤️.

Not to mention the immense amount of research put in by the author! It's so palpable in every sentence that the author studied the history & culture of the people she wanted to write about. The visibility this book has given to the Muslim/Islamic communities, East African & central/south Asian cultures, in a fantasy no less, is unmatched. This is the kind of book I live for, and it's been a while since I came across one🥺🥰.

Even each character is given so much depth, greyness, imperfectness, that they feel tangible and absolutely some of the best characters I've ever come across🥹❤️🥰. My first time ever rooting for both men in a love triangle - this is unheard of for most of us, let's be honest😅.

I feel like this review isn't giving the book the justice it deserves... probably because it's been so long since I read it & the world has been in chaos since then, and I just haven't been in the mood to post ... but you all NEED to read this series. If you're into ✨️excellent world building✨️beautifully written characters✨️humorous banter✨️ R. F. Kuang books✨️ and most importantly, you never want any one people to be oppressed, m*rd€red, g€nOc!d€d, ever again, you need to run to this book!!!

P.S. There is one aspect of the story related to Islamic history that didn't sit well with me...dm2discuss on instagram @radhi_inthelibrary
