Miss Iceland by Auður Ava Ólafsdóttir

2.0

An ungraspable novel because it wants to be something which in my opinion it does not become. It is a conversational peace not unlike the Cusk-Outline-Trilogy, but the dialogue is tedious and bland. And it is a political statement but very heavy handed in its message about discrimination.
I found all the characters rather flat and their function seemed to be that of a backdrop for the bigger idea of criticizing the misogynistic 60s in Iceland. The protagonist wasn’t fully flashed out and I couldn’t feel for her. Even though she should be a character which I would very much like to meet: a nerdy writer, beautiful and caring. ( And I found her relationship unbearable and wanted to stop reading just because of that wimpy snooze who is her boyfriend).
But: the book has its moments: the nature writing and Iseys letters were great. Also: a wonderful dad figure. And how the best friends look out for each other is also a plus.
All in all: I don’t think that reading time wasted especially not because I read it in Iceland and it was a nice companion for Reykjavik and its surroundings.
