The War of Two Queens by Jennifer L. Armentrout

3.0

I'll try to keep this review as spoiler free as possible:

This 4th book in the Blood and Ash series is my least favorite so far. Books 1 and 2 were 4.5/5 star books, book 3 was 4 stars, but this was a 3 star read for me.

Way too much of this book was devoted to separation. I felt like the main plot of The War of Two Queens dealt with resolving a separation, more so than a war which is actually in the title of the book!

Can the real Cas please stand up? Because the Cas here is a shadow of his former self and not because of *events* that happened; it seems like his sole function at this point in the series is to worship Poppy.

Speaking of Poppy, I rarely use this term because I think it is overused in the literary world, but, as much as it pains me to say, Poppy has become a Mary Sue. She continually develops more powers and becomes even more flawless. The Poppy of book 4 isn't even remotely related to the Poppy of book 1. I don't feel emotionally connected to Poppy at this point, because she isn't relatable in any way. The powers she develops are increasingly convenient to the point of incredulity, especially at the end of The War of Two Queens.

*sigh* I'm totally going to continue with this series, because I'm invested in it at this point. But, I really hope Armentrout brings some heart, soul, and flaws back into her characters.
