The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan

3.0

I decided to purchase two of these books. The idea to form a mini book club with my 12 year old nephew during summer vacation, to improve his reading skills and to possibly getting him into the notion of reading for pleasure. I finished the book before him... I couldn't contain myself, it does prompt you to continue turning pages though I had some issues with it. Overall the idea is great, I love the fact that the series is based on greek mythology but there were parts, in particular the beginning and the end that reminded me too much of the Harry Potter series but I wonder was this done on purpose or was it coincidence since it is based on a pre teen boy with "special" powers. I do have to mention that I loved the fact that even though the book is meant for a younger audience, I found that problems that are real in our society are listed in the story in a very clever way and it is possible that a younger audience might not be able to pick these up the same way an adult might, which makes me believe the story is great for young and old. Was it good enough to make me buy the rest of the books in the series? Don't think so. Unless my nephew wants to continue with the book club, I don't think I will continue.
