The Cuckoo's Calling by Robert Galbraith

3.0

So.

I sat on this review for a bit. Why did I give it three stars? Why did I deny it four, or five?

For a mystery, it's not that engaging. The character building is nice an the plot is interesting, but it felt lacking. It felt like all your favorite ingredients were in a drink, but it just wasn't made right. So it tastes off. This book felt off.

But I devoured it, and now I'm on book two.

The biggest problem I'm having is this instant attraction between Robin and Strike that JKR writes as if the characters are oblivious to their own fascination in one another. But guess what, Strike thinks about Robin a bit more heavily than Robin thinks about Strike. Strike finds her beautiful. Strike wants to pursue a relationship, but the ring is in his way, so he's grateful for that.

I think it just developed a little too fast and it just didn't simmer and boil. It just erupted.

So now I want it to happen, and I hate her boyfriend/fiance/intended with a passion.

So, the mystery was okay, the story was okay, but the character development shined more. I want to know why Strike wanted to be a detective - what made him go from the war to starting a detective agency? Hopefully time will tell.
