The Republic of Pirates: Being the True and Surprising Story of the Caribbean Pirates and the Man Who Brought Them Down by Colin Woodard

4.0

Dense and informative. I found the narrative in the first third somewhat hard to follow due to the frequent shifting of focus, its historical trappings quite evident then, but the book improves dramatically when Blackbeard comes to the fore and the principal happenings of Nassau occur. That said, I do wish the text went deeper into Nassau itself. Despite the title, Nassau lacks for details, and little is spent on why it was such a vital and significant capital to the pirates.
