Blood of My Blood by Barry Lyga

5.0

4.5 out of 5 stars

I normally do not get creeped out or scared by books (mostly because I cannot see what is going on). However, Lyga has a way of writing his characters and the scenery that gave me chills at some points; especially when we hear Billy speak. The way he builds tension through short chapters and the omnipotent POV really struck me throughout the novel. I was genuinely surprised by the huge twist at the end.

Although the plot is pretty unbelievable at some points (especially how much Jasper and his friends can get away with), I really like the way he viewed psychology through Jasper's development and the way Billy plays with his victims. I also really enjoyed the portrayal of a biracial couple, especially through the interactions of the people around Jasper and Connie.

The reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because I thought that the epilogue was a little cheesy and unnecessary. I thought it detracted from the dramatic ending which had already tied up the loose ends well.
