The Year of the Flood by Margaret Atwood

3.0

Ended up liking this a little more than Oryx and Crake, since the characters were actually sympathetic this time and didn't get quite so annoying about their stunted emotions. It also added a little more depth to the world in general, a nice break from the Crake fixation from the first book. I think I also just in general enjoy a more linear plot—though we still hopped back and forth, don't get me wrong—it's nice to have people with some agency and purpose to follow. In particular, it's fascinating to see the background characters from O&C to have some light focused on them, as trashily as Jimmy treats them all. It did get a little like 'oh of course that's Jimmy's [character name here]' from O&C, as if the world still needs to revolve around that useless idiot, but given that [character name here] is way more interesting than Jimmy, than it's ok with me.
