De Amulet by Simone van der Vlugt

4.0

(Again - sorry, I don't think I feel confident expressing myself in dutch yet - also I don't want to butcher the language even more than I would in daily conversation)
4 stars ~ To say it simply - this book was great! In no way did this go where I expected it to go, but it was still amazing. It was really well written, the characters were amazing. I really like the overall story arc, this is the perfect example of a really good stand-alone novel. Nina developed a lot during her journey and while I know it didn't end I know she will be okay, it was a really good ending.
Also, I just want to mention I just really appreciated that Nina spend time worrying about her period while she was on the road. Yes this is not something women spend all day every day thinking about, but it is something that happens (especially before birth control was invented) and not enough books with teenaged women (that I've read) actually mention this.

The one minor little bad thing about this was that, because this is a historical-fiction novel, I sometimes had no clue what was really going on. I never even heard about the 30-year war before reading this book. I looked up a 5 minute video about it for context and that helped a little - but quite a lot of things were not covered in the video, so then I had no idea what they were talking about in the book. This wasn't a major hinderance - but at the same time I found myself picking up my phone a lot in the first half to do some research.
