Born Wicked by Jessica Spotswood

3.0

in an alternate turn-of-the-century new england, cate cahill and her two younger sisters struggle to conceal the fact that they are witches from the town's brotherhood. if caught or even suspected, they will be arrested and thrown into an asylum. cate misses the guidance of her late witch mother, especially after she discovers that she & her sisters are part of a dangerous prophesy that could either bring witches back to power or destroy them forever.

this is a good story, and i enjoyed the setting set up by spotswood. the writing itself didn't do much for me- it seemed a rather graceless vehicle for delivering the plot. i think teens might like this if they enjoyed the gemma doyle trilogy by libba bray.
