The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson

2.0

When I have a vastly different opinion on a book than the majority of other readers, I feel like I'm living on another planet. And, I am reminded why I don't read many modern 'bestsellers'. First off, major content warning: This book has marital r*pe AND pretty strong medical abuse in it. The medical abuse scene was particularly difficult for me, and I almost did not read the rest of the book after that! I also felt that the author connected the challenges of these very small number of 'blue people' to that of being Black, which feels disrespectful to me. I tried to do a little reading, and see if that was true at all, but I felt like it was taking a lot of liberties that I was uncomfortable with. The ending was also just.. too much. It turned into a silly soap opera, and had me rolling my eyes. I had almost moved this to 3 stars, maybe 2.5 stars, but the ending just killed me, and not in a good way. I really just.. don't understand why everybody loves this book so much.
