Reminds me of Brian Selznick's style - partially written, and partially illustrated. Here we have two timelines: one set in 1982 and written by orphan Mary in the form of a journal, the other set in 2017 following Ella's story and illustrated. The overall vibe is mysterious, eerie, and sad. It highlights the importance of paying attention to the relationships between children, especially between girls, because things may not always be what they seem.
