This Memoir is a great reflection on the relationships that are nurtured through food. When Michelle and her mom’s relationship thrives on their shared love of food. It’s a work of art- the pain, the grief, the hope her and her father hold onto. Even after her mother passes the relationship her father and her have over traveling and food.
This book handles love and relationships through the lense of Asian Americans. The struggle to relate to your parents culture and heritage, when the only connection you have is food- not being able to speak your parents native tongue. The struggle your Asian side of the family has to find the ‘Asian’ parts of you. This book perfectly explains how it feels to be too white for Asians and too Asian for whites. All while handling grief.
