In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom by Yeonmi Park, Maryanne Vollers

5.0

I was hesitant to read this book because i was afraid i wouldn’t be able to relate or that i would get overly emotional. It turned out to be neither and that was a good thing.
The story telling is very compelling and i was able to listen to it with somewhat of a distanced mindset while also in an educational mode. That’s more of a personal observation than a commentary on the narrative. I was happy to be able to give it my full attention and hear what she had to say instead of succumbing to my own emotions.
I learned a lot from this. Thank you, Yeonmi. Opening up about this is so courageous. I appreciate learning more of what life is like in North Korea from someone who was actually there - not just hearsay or coming from a visitor/journalist. (Not to downplay their contributions.)
