Moll Flanders by Daniel Defoe

3.0

Here's a 21st century review of this frustrating book: the men were simps.

Anyway, Moll Flanders and the rest of the characters seem like shells. They merely act upon social expectations. They may be cunning or controversial, but they are empty. They do not seem to have an actual sense of self. It's as if they aren't given the chance to do so considering the era they're in. And so they all only react to stimuli, they're not individuals. BUT, the book is good in detailing the absolute tragedy it is to be born in Moll Flanders' status.

Moll Flanders is the 17th century woman. Unfortunate.
