The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson

adventurous dark emotional mysterious

5.0

THE WAY OF KINGS is the first book in what promises to be an epic fantasy saga. a surgeon turned spearman, a young woman trying to save her family, a brightlord with his back against the wall, his son with something to prove, and a continent on the brink of collapse after years of war.

"life before death. strength before weakness. journey before destination."

this isn’t my first sanderson book so i had a rough idea of what i was getting myself into but my expectations were quickly overrun in the best way possible. i truly tried to take my time with this book, absorbing as much of it as i could but i absolutely devoured the final 200 pages in one sitting.

i loved the worldbuilding. there truly is a lot going on and it can be quite overwhelming at first but once i got the hang of it, reading about shardblades and voidbringers and spren almost became second nature. i loved the characters and their arcs, especially those of kaladin and dalinar. those two are, among some others, my favourite characters. i’m very excited to see what the rest of the series has in store for them and others like shallan or adolin.

"i will protect those who cannot protect themselves."
