Brooks’s weaknesses are on full display here—the plot follows the formula he set up in previous Shannara novels, and both dialogue and introspection tend to run in circles (as if he’s trying to hit a word count). That said, some the characters here are interesting—especially Walker Boh—and the plot goes in a few unexpected ways. It’s largely successful in spite of the few issues it does have.
