The Summer I Wasn't Me by Jessica Verdi
4.0
Initial thoughts: this is the book version of But I'm A Cheerleader! Gender roles being enforced and humor, I'm all about this critique.
Yes, I felt it resembled it through and through but it went deeper and lost a lot of humor that turned into relatable material and true fear for the characters that I quickly learned to love. And all throughout I could not help but looking back to the first paragraphs describing the road being molded to look natural. Because nature has a certain way of being and that is exactly what this book shows: people being molded into what is assumed to be natural.
But it goes even deeper than that. This book sheds beautiful light on first love and discovering yourself while also showing the horror of reparative therapy. There are bits to cringe at in ways you want to protect the characters while also having moments to look forward to for yourself and the characters.
The writing is easy and relaxed much like the protagonist as it is in her perspective but also very mature for a teenager. The writing style is intriguing as it allows flashbacks at opportune moments that allow the pieces to click in a well organized manner.
I am in love with this book.
