This book is the third in the Little Britches series.  You do not need to read the first two but those help tremendously in fleshing out the main character, Ralph.    Ralph is only a boy when he goes to work on a cattle ranch with grown men, earning a man's wages.  A fun read.  The characters are what make the story.
