The first 150 pages of this book were is DESPERATE need of an editor. If those pages had been cut down to 50, this book would have been 5 stars. It takes too long to get to the action, but once it does I couldn't put it down. It a beautiful story of friendship, bravery, and resilience. I enjoyed all of the characters, though in the first pages Irene sounded like an idiot with an idealized version of war in her head. That quickly changed when the action started. While she kept some of her more idealized versions she quickly learned and adapted to what war is truly like.
