Dune: The Waters of Kanly by Kevin J. Anderson, Brian Herbert

adventurous dark fast-paced

2.0

The art is generally good, though the colors seem too bright compared to the tone of the story. The story is just okay. Gurney, to me, comes off as annoying. It is interesting seeing this version of him operate under the belief that all the Atreides are dead, in order to juxtapose his later disillusionment with them. Like most Dune works coming out, this one is unnecessary. The length of it is a strength and a weakness -- It's not long enough to outstay its welcome, but not long enough to sufficiently establish new characters, or stakes, or anything intriguing. Finally, Gurney's song lyrics just don't appeal to me.
