When I saw this book described as post-apocalyptic sci-fi mixed with a crime thriller, I couldn't not request it.
It's a touch of Gutter Child, with hints of Minority Report and The Truman Show. Quite a combo, right?
It's altogether exciting and heartbreaking.
Myrra Dal is a domestic contract worker, who will work for 50 years until she gains freedom. When a tragic event involving her employers threatens her to be seen as a criminal, she takes to the road. And these are in a world unlike any we have ever experienced - a world with an imminent threat upon it.
Chapters alternate between Myrra and New London Security Bureau investigator Tobias Bendel, as well as chapters describing specific areas of their world.
Debut author Marissa Levien fleshes out this world beautifully; with well-considered imagery and origin stories, new blends of cultures and re-imagined foundations.
At the risk of sounding inarticulate, this was a super cool read. Recommended!
