The Girl Who Drank the Moon by Kelly Barnhill

3.0

The writing was beautiful, but it dragged on a lot. It seemed to flip-flop between being fast-paced and exciting (the best parts, which were why I didn't DNF) and being super dull and slow. There were a lot of repeated parts, like the translating of the crow, which took 3-4 lines every time it talked, and it mostly just said: "Luna, Luna, Luna" (I skipped a paragraph whenever the crow was mentioned). I didn't want to pick up the book, so it took me forever to finish it. It was a great bedtime read because I'd rather sleep than have to read the boring parts (that was the next night's me's problem).
I would recommend this as a story to read to children because it really was a good story/fairy tale. However, it's not great if you're trying to get back into reading or as a starting book for older children to read on their own.
