The Fortunes of Jaded Women by Carolyn Huynh
4.0
The Duong sisters are cursed. Everyone in Little Saigon in Orange County, California, knows this. They've been cursed for generations, beginning with their ancestor Oanh, who fled her marriage for love, and whose descendants were fated with unhappy marriages and only gave birth to daughters--never sons.
The descendants of Oanh Duong endure loveless marriages, estrangement, and unhappiness. That all changes when Mai Nguyen visits her psychic, Auntie Hua, on the island of Kauai, where she predicts her family will see one funeral, a marriage, and the birth of a son in the coming year. Armed with this prediction, Mai sets off doing the one thing she thought she'd never do: breathe out the past and reconcile with her sisters and daughters.
Carolyn Huynh's book about reconciliation, healing, and love is sharp, witty, full of candor, and will make you laugh. There are plenty of twists and turns that will keep you guessing until the very last page, and even then you'll want to keep reading about the Duong women. This was such a great book to begin 2023 with, and I highly recommend it!
